Holidays to The Rhine, Mosel and Eifel
Two rivers are the lifeblood of this region – the mighty Rhine and the gentler Moselle. Whereas the Rhine may be rich in castles, the Moselle is by no means the lesser attractive of the two, with its serene nature. But wine also flows freely and beneficently in this region - superb vintages are made with dedicated skill by winegrowers along both river valleys. Vine-clad hills, rich farmland, woods and mountains all make this region an area of satisfying visual appeal, not forgetting the nearby unspoiled Vulkaneifel with its wonderful deep blue volcanic lakes, ideal for bathing. The region also has some of Germany’s greatest cities: historic Cologne with its roman and medieval associations; Düsseldorf, a vital modern city and Bonn, the birthplace of Beethoven.
There are also the famous Rhine wine towns, like picturesque Rüdesheim and Boppard with its lovely churches. Trier, on the Moselle, is Germany’s oldest city – it existed before Christ; Bernkastel is the “wine-capital” of the river, while Cochem downstream is a lively popular resort. For those searching for a quieter resort, there is the town of Zell-Moselle with its beautiful river promenade. The Ahr, a tributary of the Rhine, has been producing quality German red wines since the nineties, however the Riesling grape is still king of the grapes in Rhine and Moselle valleys with wines to suit every palate.
